Indigenous Creative Practice

COURSE

Course description

Indigenous Creative Practice supports music and all educators who are on the journey of embedding Indigenous ways of knowing and being in their classrooms in alignment with the new BC music curriculum, the educational Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, and UNDRIP. Practical and experiential strategies are explored including, but not limited to, drumming, singing, story sharing, and exploring/making through Indigenous creative practices. We will delve into fostering relationships, embedding content, enacting Indigenous ways of knowing and being, and incorporating Indigenous worldviews as they pertain to including cultural practice within your educational pedagogies.

This course enacts Indigenous ways of knowing and being by looking, listening, learning and doing through an Indigenous lens. We delve into what it means to decolonize at the site of developing relationships with Indigenous peoples, laws, knowledges, creative practices and consensual allyship. While there are some readings, cultural knowledge keepers are invited into our circle including elders, educators and community members to share their experiences and teachings with us. We will prepare and bring to life a drum; paint the drum, make a story rattle; make a drumstick; share in ceremony; learn, sing, drum and dance songs; share knowledge and story in circle; and finally feast and celebrate our communal learning experience.

This course takes place on and off campus at Aunty Collective Indigenous Art Culture & Learning Hub, as well as out on Lək̓ʷəŋən land.
