Course description

A background on how Canadian law is made - by legislators, ministers, some regulators and by the courts - is followed by an examination of key areas of law and how they and related legal processes can affect business operations.

By the end of this course, students will have a general understanding of legal concepts and processes in the areas of law that business owners and managers frequently encounter.

Principal topics include:

  • the Canadian legal system;
  • intentional torts and negligence;
  • how contracts get formed, performed, breached and, if necessary, decided by a court or arbitrator;
  • the corporation - its attributes and some of its important rules, particularly for directors; and
  • other topics by interest and by consensus.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Better understand the Canadian legal system and how it operates;
  • Recognize and respond to potential legal problems and risks;
  • Understand the legal rights and duties of a business that arise in selected transactions, relationships and activities; and
  • Interpret and understand legal advice and how to instruct legal counsel.
