Q&A with Dr. Nicholas Tong – Presenter at the 25th Annual Current Concepts in Dentistry
If you hadn't pursued dentistry, what other profession do you think you might have chosen? What drew you to that field?
I would have been a musician! I grew up playing violin and clarinet.
Your proudest professional moment is...
When I developed a post-graduate training program in geriatric dentistry at the University of British Columbia, and I had prospective students contact me and apply for the program. To put something out into the world and have others notice it has been a great gift of my time as an educator.
The biggest lesson you take out of being an educator is...
That you contribute greatly to the overall development of clinicians. As instructors, we "coach in the moment" and "coach over time." We have the opportunity to develop a relationship with learners, provide them with a conducive learning environment, and help them make their own success. My greatest reward is when my alumni do well in their lives, personally and professionally.
What career advice would you give to new dentists/dental professionals?
Do a general practice residency or AEGD program. Programs after dental school are profoundly impactful and change how you view the profession. Think beyond your own clinic and think about how you can impact communities of people and beyond.
Who would you consider your mentor and why?
I have been fortunate to have been mentored by many great thinkers in geriatric dentistry, including Drs. Chris Wyatt and Michael MacEntee at UBC. The platform they have created at UBC has allowed me the opportunity to expand our curriculum and innovate in the world of dental education.
What's your guilty pleasure food?
I cannot resist chips!
Which famous person (dead or alive) would you like to have dinner with?
Julian Lage!
What’s your dream vacation destination?
San Sebastian.
