Introduction to the Human Dimensions of Climate Change

Course description

This course examines a range of understandings of and approaches to addressing climate change. It explores what kind of problems climate change poses; what toolkits are needed to develop and engage it effectively; how to collaborate across diverse priorities in relation to it; and what scales and kinds of actions should be prioritized.

Learning objectives

  1. Critically assess arguments and evidence about the scope and kinds of transformations needed to respond to climate change, drawing out their implications for climate action; 
  2. Integrate the importance of location, history and culture into analyses of and responses to climate change, with particular attention to Indigenous peoples’ unique situations, priorities and perspectives; 
  3. Explain the contributions of diverse forms of knowledge and expertise and the importance of collaboration in building strategies to engage climate change; 
  4. Describe at least four different ways of understanding the problem of climate change, and explain the implications of these differences for advancing effective action to respond to climate change; 
  5. Demonstrate attentiveness to audience needs, perspectives, and experiences in communicating about and mobilizing action to address climate change.

Format

Online Asynchronous delivery style over a 14-week period, requiring approximately 10 hours of coursework per week. This course will be offered in September 2023 and January 2024.
