Modern Border Management: (Im)migration and Mobility
Course description
Migration is one of the most pressing policy challenges at borders today. Governments must balance security, economic needs, and human rights across complex, interconnected systems, from asylum and refugee protection to student mobility and temporary foreign workers. Professionals working in this space require an integrated, globally-informed, yet contextually- relevant perspective.
This course examines the full range of migration governance through case studies from North America, Europe, Africa, and beyond. We will explore the inter-related migration regimes that facilitate easy mobility for some, and restriction for others. You will analyse real policy and practice dilemmas and develop the skills to evaluate migration policy options in your own context. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the complex global migration system and the contemporary challenges to this system. Each session will include short lectures, reading discussion, and an examination of case studies.
