Tim Lane has been teaching ASL courses in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Victoria since 2015. He earned a Bachelor of Computer Engineering from UVic and was a former owner of a computer and mobile device repair business.
ASL is Tim's first language. Throughout his life, he has been involved in teaching ASL ranging from one-on-one basis to community courses. For numerous years, he worked as an ASL instructor with Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre, providing home-based classes to families of Deaf children. During these years, he also developed a passion for his work as a big-brother role model, enabling him to share his inspirational experiences with other Deaf children.
He is a proud dad of three Deaf daughters ranging from seven months to five years old. He and his Deaf wife are committed to providing their daughters with a strong foundation by raising them with full exposure to an ASL environment and raising them in the Deaf friendly space where they can flourish, experiencing almost zero barriers.
Tim strongly believes that ASL as a visual language can be advantageous for hearing people to learn in addition to spoken language.
