Home / English Language Centre / From Japan to Canada: Learning English Abroad
Akihito Koyama joined the English Language Centre in summer 2024 through the Study English Abroad (SEA) program at International Christian University (ICU) in Japan.
From ocean swims to rugby matches, his time in Victoria was packed with adventure, learning and personal growth. Originally featured in the ICU SEA Program Report, his story reflects a memorable study abroad experience.
On the first day of my study abroad program, I was supposed to arrive in Vancouver via Calgary, but my connecting flight from Calgary was suddenly canceled. We could not find an alternative flight right away, so I was a bit nervous at first. However, I ended up using English extensively while negotiating with the airline—exactly what I came to Canada to do. I still remember how happy I felt when I realized my English was getting through. Thanks to the quick support of the university’s international office and travel agent, I was able to secure a hotel and a new flight. After checking into the hotel, I took the opportunity to explore downtown Calgary a bit with other students. It turned out to be a long, eventful, and unforgettable first day.
The following month and a half were full of new discoveries every day—both through academic classes and through engaging with the local culture. Academically, I focused on research writing. The instructors gave individual feedback with great care, and I felt my skills steadily improving. I also made use of the university library’s tutor system, where subject-specific professors hosted tutorials. When I was stuck on what kind of sources to use for my paper, I signed up for one of the sessions and I was amazed by how helpful and attentive the support was.
Outside of academics, one of the most memorable experiences was joining a local rugby practice that I happened to come across. Communicating through sports and connecting beyond language barriers was truly special. Beyond rugby, I also went hiking, swimming in the ocean, whale watching, watched pro wrestling, and went cycling and many more! The weather was fantastic the whole time, and I got to enjoy every activity surrounded by great scenery.
All in all, I experienced both studying and exploring, and the month and a half I spent there could not have been more fulfilling. It was one of the most intense times of my life.
