Course description

Drawing from multiple archival sources on colonial sanitation laws and methods used to enforce them, Dr. Alade will explore how some public health officials used state power during the British colonial administration of Nigeria. We will learn how race and social class shaped colonial hygiene in Lagos and how the local population negotiated a public health program designed to transform them into “environmentally responsible subjects.”
